John Cass is conducting a search for jobs related to social media in various cities. Since Chicago is my first choice of places to move when I graduate, I thought I should do my own search, just to see what’s out there.
Basically, I went to the major job searching sites and entered in various key phrases related to social media.
Here are the results:
Simply Hired:
Social media: 2
Blog: 10
Web 2.0: 31
Monster:
Social media: 0
Blog: 3
Web 2.0: 7
Career Builder:
Social media: 1
Blog: 3
Web 2.0: 10
Yahoo Hot Jobs :
Social media: 0
Blog: 1
Web 2.0: 0
Of course, my methodology was not the greatest. I wouldn’t count these results in the most scientifically accurate, but they do give a quick snapshot through the online job hunting sites. However, the scant results are not strong.
More the anything, these results give a good example of how important online networking is. Being able to connect with so many professionals all over the world is completely invaluable right now. Granted I want to work in public relations, not Web 2.0 specifically, but the industry is going in the social media direction, and marketing yourself in that realm to companies that have not fully accepted or realized new media’s uses yet would be a waste of time.
Further evidence of how important it is to monitor social media is the latest edition of Inside PR, which features a job posting from Andrew Finklater of National PR.
Why go through job searching sites when you can go straight to the source?
(For those interested, note I posted this at just before 3 am Pacific. This is what I do when I can’t sleep, which is pretty much every night.)
